In 2019 the Paks Nuclear Power Plant realized the highest electricity generation of its history with outstanding safety indicators. In the last year the four units of the facility generated a total electricity quantity of 16.285,91 GWh, thereby providing almost the half of the gross domestic electricity production. Since 1988, that is, the beginning of the four-unit electricity production, the value of the individual and the collective radiation dose in the Paks Nuclear Power Plant was the lowest in the last year, and also the value of the WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) indicator of the accidents at work was lower (0 incident) than any earlier one in the Paks Nuclear Power Plant.
Also in 2019, the Paks Nuclear Power Plant operated as the basic pillar of the Hungarian carbon-dioxide-free electricity production. The electricity quantity of 16.285,91 GWh generated by the reactors of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which is more than ever before, represents almost 50 percent of the domestic gross electricity production. Simultaneously with the outstanding electricity production data, also high level safety indicators were realized at Paks: neither in 2019 there was any event classified as level 1 or higher on the international seven-level nuclear event scale (INES-scale), and the number of events classified as the lowest ones, that is, INES 0, reduced to the historical low point with ten events.
For the Paks Nuclear Power Plant the first priority is the safe operation which is continuously inspected by a number of Hungarian and international organizations. One of the most significant ones of such organizations is the WANO the accident-at-work indicator of which was zero in case of Paks in 2019. It means that there was no any accident suffered by employees of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and involving incapacity for work in the most complex industrial facility of Hungary, thereby justifying the results of continuous safety enhancement developments of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the preparedness of its employees. In addition to the regular international inspection yearly performed, the WANO will conduct a new type inspection in the Paks Nuclear Power Plant this year: as preparation of the so called WANO main review planned to be performed in summer, also observations of simulator work of the control room staff operating the nuclear power plant reactors, will already be conducted in February.
In order to continue the innovation of 15-month fuel cycle introduced five years ago and recognized with international awards, the nuclear power plant, this year, starts to use the further developed fuel assemblies with reduced fuel rod diameter. Such innovative solution allows to use less fuel assemblies for provision of the same reactor power. Consequently, the quantity of high-level radioactive waste will be further decreased and also the environmental impacts of the nuclear power plant, which are already now at an extraordinarily low level, will also be further decreased.
Furthermore, the developments, commenced in the previous years, supporting further increase in safety margins and continuously improving the availability of the units, as well as the introduction of the new nuclear power plant operating model adapting the best international practice, will be continued in 2020, as well.
