MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Private Llc. celebrates the 40th anniversary of its groundbreaking ceremony in October 2015. By today Paks NPP has matured to cover nearly 50% of the total energy output of Hungary while generating no carbon dioxide, the key contributor to the global greenhouse effect.
„The decision in energy policy brought out forty years ago was a complicated one and also courageous in today's terms. The forward-looking decision brought out recently by the Hungarian government to preserve the nuclear energy generation capacity is comparable in terms of courage, and based on the results of the four units currently in operation we can rest assured safe in the knowledge that the decision was the right one. The entire staff participating in the implementation of the project and operation of the facility faced enormous challenges in building and operating the Paks NPP. The tasks and difficulties bolstered our knowledge and today we can firmly assert that the efforts made have created a robust foundation for achieving the objectives of the National Energy Strategy. Through the efficient, cost-conscious and safe operation of the available assets Paks NPP, the contributor of over 50% of the Hungarian energy output is to become a cornerstone of government efforts in reducing overhead costs”– said dr. András Aradszki, under-secretary at the Ministry of National Development responsible for energy-related matters, at the event held on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the nuclear power plant.
„MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Private Llc. is the largest company of the MVM Group playing a key role in the energy generation industry of Hungary. The four units in Paks generate the cheapest electric energy in Hungary so that no greenhouse gases are emitted at all. We proudly second the statement made in the recent expert review that Paks NPP is one of the safest power plants in Europe.” – stressed Péter Csiba, President and CEO of MVM Hungarian Electricity Private Llc., on the occasion of the anniversary.
„Thanks to the ongoing upgrades Paks NPP is now one generation younger and more advanced than it was at inception. The upgrades implemented in the past 10 years alone added HUF 12 billion in terms of annual revenue, and the currently ongoing projects will add another HUF 8 billion p.a. Along with the achievements of the past years the anniversary of the erstwhile groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes the well-substantiated vision of the future offered to the Hungarian energy consumers as a result of the plant life extension” – said István Hamvas, CEO of Paks NPP at the celebration of the anniversary, where the time capsule enclosed in the original foundation stone was opened and placed in a new, ceremoniously dedicated foundation stone.
By the contemporary accounts the primary foundation stone of Paks NPP was placed 40 years ago in a separate shaft dug next to the excavation void of reactor No. 1, witnessed by a number of high-ranking government officials including the Vice-Chairman of the then Council of Ministers. Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony attracting great attention of the general public the construction works had already been in progress with the participation of four companies of the Hungarian Army.
In order to preserve the original foundation stone it was soon lifted from the said location, and after that no track of it could be found. The stone reappeared only in 1992 in a warehouse, when a box of unspecified content was opened. Since 1995 the foundation stone has been exhibited in the Information and Visitor Center of the NPP. From the twenty-year old Visitor Center the urn containing the contemporary relics was returned today to its initial place.
