Production of Paks Nuclear Power Plant risen to suffice additional 80K households
After top production in 2015, Paks Nuclear Power Plant records another extraordinary production year in 2016 constituted by four units having generated 16 053,9 GWh electric energy that covers 51,3% of the gross domestic energy production. The performance record is dedicated to the changeover to a 15 month fuel campaign resulting in 100% load factor for Unit 3 unrivalled among the world's 23 WWER reactor units.
„Paks Nuclear Power Plant with its production record significantly contributes to the accomplishment of the strategic objectives of MVM Holding and represents a guarantee through its reliable performances for the long term electric-energy supplies in the country. The Nuclear Power Plant is a cornerstone of sustainable energy production, its efficient operation warrants low electric-energy prices" - says Mr. Peter Csiba, CEO, President of MVM Hungarian Power Utilities Ltd.
„In 2016 Paks Nuclear Power Plant accomplished its most important goal again, namely producing high quantities of inexpensive electric energy beside the constant and undisputed priority placed on safety. These new peak production figures repeatedly proved that the constant development of safety is an inevitable factor to performance improvements. The conclusions of two international review missions in 2016 confirmed that the operation of Paks Nuclear Power Plant is safe and the level of safety culture continuously develops" - pointed out Mr. Istvan Hamvas CEO of MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd.
„In 2016 there were no occurrences of safety related events of level 1 or higher on the international nuclear event scale (INES) and level 0 - the lowest level - of reportable events had merely 17 cases, approximately half of the volume we had 10 years ago. The collective dose in 2016 showed similarly low figures having dropped in recent years to less than half” – added the CEO.
Istvan Hamvas pointed out: the 100% availability of Unit 3 by itself is a unique achievement raising the aggregate Paks Nuclear Power Plant value to 91.38%. This is the result of the 15-month fuel campaign (C15) introduced in 2015 as is the decrease of collective dose, spent fuel, low- and medium level radioactive waste quantities.
Service time extension of Unit 3 started in 2015 was also completed successfully: at the end of 2016 the National Nuclear Regulator issued its license for the prolonged operation and functioning of the unit commissioned back in 1986 for 20 more years thus it continues to take its share in the production of electric energy until 2036. Reconstruction of turbines in the Nuclear Power Plant is according to schedule that will add more than 30 MW to the current 2000 MW overall nominal power output of the plant.
Paks Nuclear Power Plant continues to play an integral role in the energy supplies in the country, the domestic energy policy keeps on being unconceivable without the nuclear power plant - as was pointed out at the press conference. The plant ensuring a constant and balanced production has at all times sufficient fuel reserves for two years and it is in no way exposed to weather conditions therefore is the most important base load power plant in the country the reservation of whose capacities is of key importance to Hungary.
